Nutrition - Baileys Basics
We can all be forgiven for forgetting that in many ways our horses bodies aren’t all that different from our own. What we choose to fuel them with, is really important. There’s a few key things that our horses need from their feed, to keep their bodies in tip top condition. You might just be surprised just how familiar they are:
Protein – So, we all know protein is needed for muscle growth and repair. Protein is composed of individual amino acids, of which there are two types. In relation to feed, we need to be thinking about 'essential' amino acids like lysine and methionine. These must be added to our horses diet, as their body's can't synthesize them.
Carbohydrates – Sometimes considered the enemy (for both ourselves and out horses) carbs still have a function! Starch is made up of glucose molecules, it’s simple structure makes it easy for your horses body to digest, for a quick burst of energy.
Fat – Much like carbs, fats are an energy source. What’s the difference? Vegetable oils offer over twice the as many calories as the same weight of cereals. More difficult to process, they slowly release this energy throughout the day, so they’re ‘non-heating’.
Fibre – This is they key to a happy, healthy horse! Their whole digestive system is geared towards fermenting and breaking down grass and hay.
Vitamins & Minerals – We’ll save you the lecture. Everyone knows that vitamins and minerals are needed for proper functioning. Deficiencies can cause a whole lot of nasty problems and avoiding this is a real must.
